Marie Curie was a Polish Physicist and
Chemist. She was one of the most famous scientists of her time. She was awarded
Nobel Prize twice.
Marie
Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland on 7 November, 1867. She was the daughter of a
teacher. In 1891, she went to Paris to study physics and mathematics at the
University of Sorborne where she met Pierre Curie, a professor of physics. They
were married in 1895. In 1898, Pierre Curie and Marie Curie discovered radium.
She, along with her husband was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.
Pierre Curie was knocked down and killed by a carriage in 1906. Marie Curie
took over his teaching post and became the first female professor at Sorborne.
She received a second Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. In 1920, her health
was beginning to deteriorate. She died on 4 July 1934 from Leukaemia.
