Socrates was born of poor working class
family probably in the year 470 B.C. He had the usual education in those days
learning music science philosophy and gymnastics. He also studied the arts,
culture, public meeting and argument.
As a young man he served the army and fought in
several battle with great courage. When he left the army, some of his friends
wanted him to join the politics. But he refused to do so for he left that he
had another mission in life. This mission was to unmask the ignorance of people
and reveal the truth to them.
He
moved up and down the streets of Athens, in market place, in the house of the
rich and in the workshop of the poor. Socrates carries on his search for truth.
His method was to stop someone to question him on some facts. If their answers
were incorrect, he would correct them in simple explanation. By these questions
he would show them how vague and incomplete their ideas were. Then he would
help them to build up his ideas on a surer foundation.
